Portugal assumes secretariat of the EURODEFENSE Network
Portugal assumes secretariat of the EURODEFENSE NetworkOn 18 November 2024, by decision of the Council of Presidents of the EURODEFENSE Network, EuroDefense-Portugal took over the General Secretariat of the international network for a four-year term, succeeding EuroDéfense-France, which had held the secretariat since its creation.
The EURODEFENSE network shares the specific objective: ‘To continue searching for an efficient Defence of Europe”. In addition to the mission of developing study and reflection on how to develop the European pillar within the Atlantic Alliance, the network focuses on building credible European operational capabilities and reinforcing the European Defence Technological and Industrial Base.
The Secretary General of EURODEFENSE plays a crucial role in coordinating and organising the network. His main functions include:
- Supporting the Presidency: Providing direct support to the rotating EURODEFENSE Presidency whenever necessary.
- Coordinating of Activities: Facilitating the planning, execution and follow-up of actions promoted by the network.
- Recording Management and Updating: Keeping the list of member associations, EWGs and the network’s calendar of activities up to date.
- Communicating and Publishing: Ensuring internal communication in collaboration with the President, as well as compiling and distributing important documents and materials prepared by the national associations.
These functions guarantee EURODEFENSE’s cohesion, efficiency and strategic communication, reinforcing its action at European level.

The Secretary General:
Miguel Carvalho Gomes, born in Viseu (Portugal).
He has a degree in Political Science from ISCTE-IUL, a postgraduate degree in Public Security and Defence Policies from the National Defence Institute (IDN), a postgraduate degree in Crisis Management from the Institute of Political Studies (IEP) of the Portuguese Catholic University (UCP) and the Military University Institute (IUM), a master’s degree in Economics and Public Policies and is studying for a PhD in Public Policies from ISCTE-IUL.
He has been a member of EuroDefense-Portugal since 2018, where he served as a Member of EuroDefense Jovem-Portugal between 2018 and 2020, President of EuroDefense Jovem-Portugal between 2020 and 2023 and has been a Member of the EuroDefense-Portugal Board since 2021.
Since 2022, he has been a Senior Technician at the Agency for Competitiveness and Innovation, I.P (IAPMEI).
